I am Professor of Methods of Empirical Social Research at the Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology at the University of Cologne.

Before coming to Cologne I was an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam. I completed a PhD at the University of Bamberg and a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellowship at the European University Institute.

My interests are in social demography, family relations, and life course research.

I am principal investigator of the ERC Starting Grant project KINMATRIX: Uncovering the Kinship Matrix: A New Study of Solidarity and Transmission in European Families. KINMATRIX is a 5-year project funded by the European Commission (2020-2025,
€ 1,5 million). The project description is here.

I am also principal investigator of the NORFACE project CRITEVENTS (2017-2020), which has been awarded € 1,5 million by the European Commission via an ERA-NET Cofund grant. More information about this project is here.

Please see the current vacancies for PhD positions and postdoctoral positions at my chair and at the KINMATRIX project.
